In this project, the Goodlot Farmstead Brewing Co. aimed to convert an old horse barn into an energy-saving craft brewery. Important goals here were the sustainable use of resources, including the attainment of low embodied carbon, and high energy efficiency – as a result, the finished building now fulfils passive house standards.

How was this project implemented?
The timber building frame was in good condition and was retained.
To provide protection against the demanding Canadian climate, SOLITEX MENTO 1000 roof underlayment membrane was installed from the inside behind the timber outer wall cladding …
... and also behind the metal roof!
The high-performance INTELLO vapour check/retarder, which has been certified by the Passive House institute in Germany, covers the thermal insulation on the inside.
Creative solutions on site: this improvised ‘membrane roller’ made it a lot easier to work with the rolls of INTELLO membrane.
The markings printed on the membranes are a handy guide when taping long lengths of overlaps.
Airtightness must also be ensured around the windows.
Once the INTELLO membranes were fully stuck and taped to ensure airtightness, the blown-in insulation material was installed.
